The last time I was here, I RPed a feline character while my friend played a dog, and we had the two of them talk without ever thinking about this. But recently, it came to my mind that in ADGTH the dogs couldn't communicate with either rats or horses and that's the whole reason they needed Anne-Marie for - she had the ability to talk to and understand all animals. I'm not sure if this rule was ever bent later on in the series or if it doesn't apply to cats, but should inter-species communication be possible on the boards? Should we have characters like Anne-Marie to help translate?
The alligator suddenly comes to mind as an exception =P

It was actually bent later in the series. In 'All Creatures Great And Dinky' Charlie and Itchy actually communicate with a mouse.

On one hand, that's cool! It also makes more sense to me that animals of different species would understand each other, hearing stories of strange animal friendships and of tigers nursing piglets. (Plus, my friend would love to have a mouse character).
On the other hand, it kinda sucks that the continuity was broken and that Anne-Marie's usefulness was reduced to helping only with human interactions.

Indeed. If you want my opinion I'm lead to believe that all animals can communicate. It may not be through speech but they do get their point across to one another.
And yeah, the series messed a lot of things up as well as the second movie as Bluth wasn't involved with both.
Then again, Charlie's an angel and he was able to communicate with David then have Sasha understand David as well. Maybe it's some angel thing?
A very good question, Lena. Wish I had a less confusing answer regarding the reason for the ADGTH universe.

Yea, I kinda do the same as Marcus. Even though I consider the second film the sequel.

the second film IS the sequel, but its almost like its the sequel to a movie that didnt quite happen exactly as the first one did...

I like the alternate realities point of view =P but as much as I love the first movie, I'll have to go with all animals understanding each other. It'll make things so much easier.

Everything was bent after the first movie. For one, they DID communicate with cats. A giant, talking one to be exact (I thought to myself "What is this, I don't even...") And in the series, there was a few animals here and there that talked. A mouse is all I can name for the time being. But Soapy makes a very valid point when she points out Charlie was a guardian angel during the time of the series/second movie/Christmas special. So perhaps that had something to do with animal communications in ADGTH. I dunno. Ask Dale. He knows everything. If he ever comes back that is. (Kidding, don't ask Dale. You'd be lucky if he could name the President...)
As for communications in animals, I think they communicate through actions rather than "speech" if you know what I mean. Or maybe they can? That would be so weird. Someone's cat could be talking about them behind their back to other cats... hm.
Also, welcome (back) Lena.

I've always been kinda paranoid that my cat might be talking about me behind my back.Maybe its just paranoia,or maybe that note i found that said,"i'm talking about you behind your back. Signed,Your Cat."I don't know.Guess its just paranoia.
Anyway,i agree with Wonder(not on the Dale thing.Haven't read his profile yet[if he has one]so,idk),and welcome back!
