~~Kila maintains her look of concern as she glances at Killer who seems to be on to Hedge even though she's trying to pretend everything is okay.~~
"Uh, Killer? Maybe it's something she doesn't want to talk about. I mean, it's understandable because I'm a complete stranger to both of you. Maybe she doesn't want to talk about it here and now."

Hedge looks first at Killer, then at Kila...
"No, really, it's okay Killer... Maybe it's about time I talked about it... maybe y'awl could give me some advice or something... "
Sighs deeply...

Killer's gaze shifts to Kila and he looks at her over the rims of his glasses as they slip down his nose. His look seems to say in a way that he doesn't believe Hedge feels that way, knowing her pretty well. He starts to say something, then turns to Hedge as she speaks.
"So what's on your mind?" he asks, "I'm not the best in the advice department, but--heh--I can try."

Looks at Killer, then at Kila... blinks and looks down at the table... begins making circles with her paw... "Nah! Forget it... it's nothing.."

Killer drums his claws on the table in frustration, eyeing Hedge with a frown.
"First you say maybe you should talk about it, then you change your mind," his voice expresses his slight exasperation over the matter, "C'mon, Hedge, I know, whatever it is, it's bothering you. So get it off your chest, huh?"

Looks at Killer as she senses the exasperation in his voice... "Look, I said it's okay... I don't want to talk about it... it's not important... instead of me getting it off my chest, how about you getting off my back! !!!!" In a moment of sheer frustration, Hedge abruptly pushes back from the table and stands up, knocking a chair over backwards as she does and causing the table to wobble... She looks around the table at the faces looking back at her, then says, "Excuse me, I have to use the firehydrant..."

Killer blinks in surprise not only at the way Hedge acts, but more at what she says. He stares after her for a second and looks at Kila with a confused look.
"Do females use firehydrants?" he asks incredulously, then shakes his head and goes after Hedge, "I'll be right back. Hedge! Heel! Sit! Uh...stay!"

Hedge quickly exits through the side door and literally gallops down to the pier... seeing no sign of Killer and hoping she's lost him, she sits, then lies down and gazes at the reflection of the moon in the water... whatever possessed her to say she had to use the fire hydrant vanished the moment she said it...
"Kila must think I'm a real jerk," she mutters to her reflection in the water..

Killer is not nearly as fast as Hedge, so he ends up falling behind considerably when she bolts. He slows to a stop as he has no idea what direction Hedge had taken and he resorts to trying to pick up her scent. His sense of smell is not one of his strengths though. All the years of being subjected to Carface's cigar smoke and, prior to that, being forced to inhale chemicals in the research lab, has taken its toll on his nose--not to mention his asthma. He pads slowly around outside the Fleabite, trying in vain to find Hedge's trail.

"I don't think you're a jerk."
~~Kila pads out of the shadows, having taken an alleyway she was sure would lead her to meet up with the great dane. She sits down near Hedge on the pier and looks over at her.~~
"I think you are a very nice dog and I'm glad to have met you and Killer. You're both very sweet. Killer's a bit...goofy, but...sweet."
~~She smiles a bit to herself, then grows serious in her expression.~~
"What's troubling you, Hedge? I know something is on your mind and I want to help if I can. Please talk to me."

Hedge jumps slightly as she hears Kila's voice speaking... she grabs her throat with her paw...
"Shhesh, Kila... you scared the wits out of me!"
Realizing that Kila does truly care and obviously concerned, Hedge looks back out over the water, somehow finding comfort in the quiet lapping sounds the water makes against the legs of the pier...
"It's just that sometimes I miss my boy-master so much... it hurts."

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to startle you. I just thought maybe I could help...lend you a shoulder to cry on, you know?"
~~She clears her throat and absently toys with the golden tag dangling from her rhinestone-studded collar, pondering Hedge's last statement.~~
"What...what happened to your master? Is he still...alive?"
~~Her voice wavers slightly as she asks that question, almost afraid to speak it. Her eyes search Hedge's as she awaits a response.~~

Watches Kila as she plays with her collar... sighs deeply...
"I think my master is still alive... I think I saw him at a church with some other youths awhile back.... He threw me a donut... I'm sure it was him... I looked deep into his eyes... and I'm almost positive it was him..."
Looks at Kila again... "Have you ever lived with a human, Kila?"

"Oh yes...a very long time ago. He's...dead now."
~~She looks away, swiping a paw until her eyes, willing herself not to cry in front of anyone, then continues in barely a whisper.~~
"He and...my mate...they...they died together in a terrible event..."
~~Her voice trails off and she brightens as Hedge tells her that she's certain she'd seen her master.~~
"You should try to find him again. You know a boy's best friend is his dog..."

After sniffing around for a good while and turning up nothing with his chemical-damaged nose, Killer returns to the Fleabite and heads back to where he'd left Kila...only to find she has disappeared as well.
"Kila?" he quirks a brow and heads back outside to wander the streets. Now both of his friends are missing and he is even more determined to find them. His wandering brings him to the pier at last where he sees Hedge and Kila talking together.
He observes quietly for a moment, then decides to leave them to themselves, able to tell even from his distance that they are engaged in deep, very serious conversation. He doesn't want to butt in, so he quietly pads away to sit outside the door of the Fleabite and wait for them to return.
