Charlie had remained hidden for several days after his unfortunate tangle with the female border collie and, while he had been in hiding, he had been plotting. He has no idea that Hedge is no longer behind bars, so he still believes he only has Killer to deal with. "And that'll be a cinch if I catch him alone and none of his buddies stick their noses in," he growls to himself, leaving the junkyard and heading for Carface's casino. It's well after midnight, so he knows most of Carface's thugs will have retired for the night...including Killer. All he has to do is break into the wimpy dog's office, waste him, and leave. Already, Charlie is busy tampering with the vent grate, preparing to enter the same way he and Itchy had when they kidnapped Anne Marie.

Killer lies sound asleep stretched out on the rollaway bed now his once again as Anne-Marie no longer occupies his office. Apparently, he's having a peaceful slumber, for once not haunted by dreams of his past. His expression is relaxed and not at all contorted in fear, though his paws twitch every now and then. A contented sigh escapes his lungs as he buries his muzzle in the warmth of the blankets. How could he know he's in danger? He knows nothing but silence and comfort in his sleep, which in itself is rare. How could he possibly know that, in a matter of moments, that will all change and give way to the nightmare of the waking world?

"Hello Charlie..." Speaking no other words, the great dane lashes out with her deadly tail and knocks Charlie off his feet. Then she thrusts her great paws on his chest and snarls inches from his face... "Catch who alone Charlie? And what buddies don't you want sticking their noses in?"

Killer snorts himself awake as he hears banging and crashing in the ventilation system. At first, he thinks that maybe some of Carface's rats had gotten loose, but whatever is making that racket has to be big.
Fumbling for his glasses, he quickly puts them on and digs under the bed for a flashlight. Unable to find one, he settles for a miner's cap, switching the helmet light on and slamming it on his head. He then climbs a stack of crates and opens the vent grate, crawling inside.
"Hedge, what's goin' on?" he gasps as the light from his helmet only catches the Great Dane in its beam. He hasn't noticed Charlie as his fur is darker and his being under Hedge and out of the light makes him even more inconspicuous.

"Hedge?!" Charlie snarls as Hedge pins him to the floor of the pipe, "How did you...?" He stops. He already has a pretty good idea as to how she got out of the pound. As Killer arrives, Charlie directs a punch right under Hedge's jaw, just hard enough to knock her back, freeing himself. In any other situation, he wouldn't hit a female, but he doesn't care about hurting Hedge. After all, she's a wedge between him and Itchy. Once the great dane is off him, the German Shepherd lunges at Killer and manages to catch him by his collar. He swiftly knocks Killer off his feet and, facing Hedge, he places a paw on Killer's throat. "You make one false move and the old mutt's history, lady."

Killer hardly knows what hit him when Charlie suddenly flies on him from the darkness. Everything goes pitch black as the miner's cap goes flying and the light shorts out. Killer still doesn't know who or what attacked him until Charlie speaks and by that time, he also realizes he's about to be strangled. He clamps his paws on Charlie's wrist in an attempt to keep him from pushing down on his windpipe.
"Hedge..." he gasps, frightened, "Go...get...help!"

Hedge lands on her back and is momentarily stunned, but then with lightning speed, she is on her feet, crouches low and rams her 125 pound body full force into Charlie, sinking her teeth deep into the leg wrapped around Killer's neck. Charlie is the lowest of low, lower than Carface or any of his gang. Hedge is not into 'blood and guts' but she is sickened by Charlie's unending attempt to hurt Killer, when he's too chicken to go after who really set him up... Carface...
"You make me sick, Charlie..." she snarls through her teeth, still maintaining her death grip on his leg, "And I hope you've had your rabies shot!!!!!"

"Grraaaaah!" Charlie snarls in pain as Hedge launches her counterattack and wraps her jaws around his foreleg. He reflexively releases Killer with that paw, but uses his other forepaw to keep the mongrel in place while he tries to free his leg. "Back off, Hedge! Save your energy for when I come after you again," he growls, pressing his shoulder against hers in an attempt to push her back, but in doing so, he can feel his own paws slipping.

Killer had almost managed to escape when Charlie's other paw came down on his side. Though he's not in danger of being strangled anymore, he is still very afraid, but he can't believe his ears when Charlie tells Hedge to save her strength for when she is his target again.
"Don't you even threaten her, you dirty rat!" Killer snarls, twisting himself around and snapping at Charlie's other paw, "What has she ever done to you?"
At last, he manages to clamp his jaws on Charlie's other leg. Though his jaws are weaker than Hedge's, he is able to inflict quite a bit of pain with his teeth.

Charlie writhes as both his paws are being chewed on. He knows he stands a better chance of flinging Killer off than he does Hedge and he already has a plan for doing just that. With a blink maneuver, he lashes out with the paw Killer has and flings the older dog against the wall of the pipe. A satisfying crash and the release of his foreleg is gained by that move. He then focuses his attention on Hedge and uses his now free paw to slash viciously at her neck. "Give it up, Hedge," he growls, "You may be strong, but you certainly aren't smart. Why do I say that? Because you waste your time with losers like him and his double-crossing boss."

Hedge releases her mouth from Charlie's foreleg and dodges his attempt at her throat. She quickly turns and lashes out with her back legs, thrusting them with such force that when they hit their mark, she knows she's done some damage to Charlie's face... "You know, Charlie, for a dog that once was in heaven, you sure haven't learned a thing about mercy, grace or forgiveness..."
Hedge continues her assault on Charlie and manages to speak between punches... "And as for coming after me again... Come on sucker... right now... right here... in this place..." Hedge backs off and circles Charlie, never taking his eyes off him...

Killer had hit the wall of the pipe hard and now has quite a few bruises for his trouble. He dizzily picks himself up and rubs the back of his head gingerly, then straightens his glasses and tries to recollect himself.
By the time stars stop floating around in his head, he realizes Hedge has gained the upperhand--err--paw and he grins one of his nasty triumphant-over-Charlie-type grins. Seeing an opportunity as Charlie's back is to him, he lunges forward and chomps down on the German shepherd's tail.
"Leave...her...alone!" he snarls through clenched teeth, "Why don't you get involved in a safer hobby--like picking the fleas and ticks off yourself and fixing your mangy face so Hedge doesn't hafta do it for ya?"

Ruby is walking by when she hears the sounds of a brawl.
"Hmmm," she muses, "this sounds promising." Always ready to get involved in a fight, she goes up to the open window near where the racket is coming from and gracefully drops down inside on a crate. As her eyes slowly adjust to the darkness inside, she's sure she can sense Charlie's loathsome presence. Gettin' better and better, she sneers to herself.
"You know," she says, stepping forward and speaking in her most throaty voice, "I'm feeling a serious need to kick someone's butt."

OOC: My edit button isn't working and in my last post, last sentence I said, "never taking his eyes off him"... I meant to say "never taking her eyes off him"... Duh... I'll fix it when my button jiggies show up again...
BIC: Hedge continues to stare at Charlie, but her anger is beginning to dissipate... She hates fighting but it seems the only way to survive with Charlie around... She knows she can take care of herself, but she wishes Killer would back off... he's no good in fights...
"Killer, back off before you get hurt!"
