You guys all read Ash's sticky post, right? Well, that stuff addressed has been under control lately, but perhaps it's time to touch on another subject of forum manners. I've talked about this before, but I think it's time to say it again.
Spam.
It's not the lunchmeat I'm talking about. I'm talking about posting kind of spam.
Time to clear things up. Spam generally refers to garbage posts, things that neither add onto a convo or are just unwanted (and are usually the sign of immaturity by the poster or someone that ignores the rules). Different forums have different definitions on the details, but that's more or less it. I've seen a lot of spamming posts lately, and I thought several of them "vanishing" would be enough of a hint (though sadly it isn't, hence the purpose of the post).
Here are clarifications on what spam is considered on this board.
1. " ;D "
Posts that consist entirely of smilies (those pictures on top of the posting box) or "......" are considered spam. Honestly...why do people do this? These are absolutely useless. Put a few of them along with your post to get an emotion across, sure, but posting replies of JUST smilies is just useless. I have seen a few of them and they have been deleted. If I see more, they will also be deleted. If you have nothing productive to say, don't say it at all.
2. This isn't a contest. Post counts DON'T matter for anything. That's not how you get respect. It's more the content of those posts that matters. Post if you have something productive and intelligent to say (not like "cool" or "ok"). Posting just to get your number up is just immature and shallow. I'm not saying that to anyone in particular, but it's an impression I'm getting from some people here.
3. To add on, don't feel that you have the duty to post on every single bloody post out there. BIIIG problem. I've seen people here bump up posts from 2003/04 and just add on something short and usually pointless. It's usually the same people that post waves and waves of replies to old posts. Most of these posts have been locked to prevent this. It's best to check out the more current topics or start one of your own (especially since some of the older posts will be lacking in reply. I've noticed this in some of the old roleplays months ago. Like...come on. If none of the roleplayers have replied in years, what's the use of posting? They aren't going to reply). Feel free to look, but don't touch. We all learn that lesson from our parents sometime.
4. A little bit of crazyness and insanity is good for everyone now and again, just try to be mature. Not really a rule regarding spam, but something I would like to mention rather than make another post about it.
5. The modify button is your friend. If you forgot to add something to your last post or if you made a spelling mistake, don't make a new post about it. The modify button located on your post will allow you to add, delete, and generally add changes to your post. It's just generally more efficient and it makes space on the boards.
6. I won't delete posts with improper spelling or bad grammar, but it's just something to keep in mind. Minimizing chat speak, trying to use proper English spelling/grammar (if English is not your first language, just try your best), etc, are good ways to get responses.
7. I sometimes delete them when it's taking over the post, but try to limit just OOCing posts in roleplaying (as in, just OOC convos without any roleplaying going on). RP boards are for roleplaying, not convos. Best to take it to another post.
8. If it's not your thread, watch what you're talking about. I've seen some cases (primarily on the art and fanfic boards and sometimes on roleplays, though it can happen anywhere) about people advertising their own art or making very unrelated convos on it. That's just plain rude. I'll admit that I've done it accidentally and it'll most likely happen to everyone at least once, but it's best to try to avoid it.
9. As well as the modify button, private messaging is your friend. It's where you go for lengthly 2-person convos (though if you guys have MSN/AIM/YIM/etc, even better, you can add more). It takes up space (and also considered rude if you decide to put your convo in someone else's post) and it's just generally unwanted. Messaging is a lot more efficient anyways. Plus, this is a public board, and people have the right to look wherever they want and to more or less post wherever they want (as long as it's in a place allowed in the rules and in this post), so they are allowed to nose their way in.
Maybe there are other things, but I can't think of them. I'll add in more later if I want to.
I'm not saying this out of anger, just more of a modly reminder to inform the users of KK on what is/is not allowed. If you didn't know this stuff before, well, you know now.
