Well, this isn't no prequel or sequel or else. This is just a separate short story, as it's been said above, more of a sketch. I still consider this 'fic as my most miserable fail, but who knows, maybe you'll appreciate it. I need comments, really... So, here goes:
The Anniversary
***
- The usual, Charlie?
- Nope, Hans, today I'll take a double..
The barman, was old and gray-furred, his eyes didn't see as good as they used to, most of his teeth have already dropped out, but his barman skills were still sharp, and Charlie didn't need anything else from him now.
«Hey, why didn't you bring Sasha along? Haven't seen here a year or so!» barman said. «She's busy. Very busy» Charlie replied, hesitating a bit. «Busy for the whole year?» Hans asked curiously. «I've just asked for my
double whiskey, and I still have my throat dry, Hans. What's wrong with you?» Charlie replied bitterly. «Ah, yes, sure, sorry, Charlie. I'm getting so old, you know...» barman replied, getting confused. However, Charlie's strange behavior during the year didn't go unnoticed by the old Hans...
-Que pasa, Charlie?
It was Dingo, Charlie's neighbor. Being a dog of a mixed breed, he thought of himself that Spanish blood flows in his veins, so he learned a pair of Spanish phrases and used them here and there.
-Still alive, as you can see, - Charlie answered and sped up. Dingo is such a chatterbox. Charlie didn't want to chat now...
- Hey, where's Sasha? Haven't seen you together for ages! - Dingo caught up with Charlie.
Charlie stopped for a second, shuddered a bit and then went off his way again.
- She's busy. Very busy. - Road took a turn, and Charlie left Dingo behind.
Charlie approached the flower store. Sallie, who was a marble-colored collie, turned to Charlie.
- Charlie! Is that you! Haven't seen you for ages! By the way, where's Sasha? Do you hide her or something? - Sallie winked.
Charlie flinched.
- I need roses, Sallie. Red. Twelve. - Charlie pointed at the vase where the roses were. He absolutely ignored Sallie's questions.
- Why'd you need exactly that much? - Sallie tipped her head to one side.
- It's an anniversary. Twelve months, - Charlie took the flowers, put the money on the counter and left the store before Sallie could ask anything. Collie was confused by Charlie behavior and was looking at him strangely when he left the store...
Charlie has just closed the fence' gate and was going to the back yard when someone called him by the name.
- Hey, Charlie, it's Friday! The whole block's gonna hang out at the bar tonite! Join in! You could bring Sasha along, haven't seen her for... say, ten months already! - It was one of Charlie's friends, Smiley.
-Twelve, - Charlie muttered silently.
-Um-m... What? - Smiley asked.
-No, nothing... Today I can't join you, guys. Got some business at home, - Charlie replied in a louder tone.
-Ow-w, that's just too bad. Bye then! - Smiley went away.
... Just two hours later bar was filled with dogs discussing Charlie. "He's so gloomy lately! Doesn't speak as much as he used to..." the barman tried to outvoice the others.
"Yes, yes, he didn't even stop for a chat, can you imagine?" Dingo said.
"He's bought twelve roses today for some anniversary, but he didn't tell me what anniversary is it!" Sallie replied. Discussion went on and on and everybody decided that Charlie must've been too tired.
Charlie was standing at the backyard, holding twelve roses in his paws.
- You know, Sasha... It's a pity you didn't go with me today. Too bad it is impossible, - Charlie sighed, - everybody asks about you, every single dog in the block, can you imagine? Well, I hope you're all right there. It's been a year since... twelve months you know... and... I brought these for you...
Sasha was watching Charlie from high above. A tear came down her face. "You're such a romantic person..." Sasha whispered as Charlie laid all twelve flowers at her grave, one after another...
