(Note: Sarai helps to prove that, in my mind and I'm sure many others', the Middle Ages' Catholic church was a very screwed up organization )
(EDIT: Added song lyrics)
I watched the world float to the
Dark side of the moon
After all I knew it had to be something
To do with you
I really don't mind what happens now and then
As long as you'll be my friend at the end
If I go crazy then will you still
Call me Superman
If I'm alive and well, will you be
There holding my hand
I'll keep you by my side with
My superhuman might
Kryptonite
You called me strong, you called me weak
But your secrets I will keep
You took for granted all the times I
Never let you down
You stumbled in and bumped your head, if
Not for me then you would be dead
I picked you up and put you back
On solid ground
-3 Doors Down, "Kryptonite"; chosen because it has to do with Sarai's self-appointed duty to protect a church that had murdered her.
Name: Sarai; also goes by Sarah
Species: Angel dog
Breed: Pedigree Black Labrador
Sex: Female
Alliance: Good
Age: Died at 2 years of age, has existed for over 1,000 years
Apperance: Sarai appears to be a normal Black Labrador in her mortal avatar, wearing a silver rosary around her neck. Her angel wings are a dark blue mixed with white splotches. In her human guise, she appears to be a Caucasian woman due to her Anglo-Saxon descent, with white hair and green eyes, wearing a black dress only.
Personality: Sarai is a calm and gentle one, along with one to take pity on those who suffer. She appears to be a very virtuous and pious one, but this is because she has actually had experiences with heaven since her death. She is also a bit sagacious, and gets along fine with just about everyone, even those who are less 'pure' than her, even if she shows some indignation at times.
Positive Qualities: Wise, compassionate, accepting
Negative Qualities: Sensitive, a bit indignant
Family: Her parents, Ephraim and Susanne, only had one puppy before they faced a similar fate as Sarai, and that puppy was her.
History: Sarai's life began some time in the Middle Ages. She was the pet of a peasant family, part of a simple hamlet. She lived for about a year before her fate was sealed.
With the building of a new church came the need to sanctify it by the erroneous ways of man. Thus, Sarai was reluctantly chosen to be the guardian of the church forevermore. She was not to be a guard dog, oh no... she was to be a church grim.
By the folklore of the humans, to create a guardian spirit of a new church, a black dog was to be buried alive at the north point of a newly created church, in order to protect it from the devil's influence. Thus was the fate of Sarai, and at some future point her parents. Restrained by tight ropes and placed in a ditch, she felt her life ebb away as she was entombed by the dirt being mercilessly shoveled upon her.
Soon she suffocated and died. Oh, but that church would have a spirit, alright... a sorrowful ghost of a dog who howled, did its best to ruin the church and scare off its faithful with poltergeist phenomenon, who clanged the church bells. She wondered where this God was that she was sacrificed for, becoming a being of despair and agony.
Some time later, Sarai would reluctantly become the church's guardian as a gang of bandits entered the chapel during Communion, intending to rob the people blind. She saw the men of God act selflessly, giving up everything they had in the church to protect the lives of the churchgoers. The ruthless bandits, their greed unsated, thus began to kill those same holy men.
Sarai felt pain, and only then had she forgiven what was done to her by mankind. She felt some force pull her upward. She heard a voice speak to her, telling her to defend the church as was forced upon her. She found herself being turned into a human, and being given a whip with a cross in the handle. She was asked to fight the men, but not to kill them.
Sarai accepted this task, and in the form of a human fought off the men. No matter how many times she was struck by their iron and steel weapons, she was not in any shape, way or form hurt. Her holy bullwhip struck true, scaring off the bandits. Once the last one fled, Sarai found herself ascending to heaven once more.
In time she learned that this voice came from an ancestor of Annabelle, who was the head angel of the canine side of Paradise, and had met other such dogs who were also sacrificed to protect churches in those times. Forgiving her murderers, she became a guardian angel of both the church and, when it eventually became ruins, of dogs.
To those who had read through Naomi's history in her profile, yes, Sarai was the angel dog who had appeared before the wolf-dog. To this day Sarai still looks after Naomi and Keith. Will there ever be a day she might return to Earth to meet with her protected? Only time will tell.
Voice Actor: Edie Mirman, who did Gatomon's voice over in the first two seasons of the English dub of the Digimon anime.
