I've long wondered why exactly Charlie couldn't return to Heaven if he (or any dog) touched his/her watch. It seems a little harsh to me to condemn somebody to an eternity in Hell just because they value their life and want to live. I mean, we're all pretty much born with an instinct for survival in us. So, was never being able to return a punishment for stealing or being power hungry (for unnatural power)? And why did Charlie get so little sympathy for being murdered?

Good question David. I'll have to think about this one.

Well, you kinda have to look at his background during the film up to that point, and Charlie stole the watch out of revenge whilst also deceiving Annabelle in the process and probably the reason for less sympathy from her is that, Everyone dies some way or another and she believed that that it was his time then and so, he's dead.

Well, she told Carface the same thing as Charlie, but she had even more reason not to trust him due to his past misdeeds than Charlie. Would every dog face the same consequences though? I've long felt that if she had shown Charlie a little more sympathy for being murdered young, he would have been less likely to have rewound the watch.

They never actually said Carface escaped Heaven, and to Annabelle, Someone's time is someone's time, at that point she didn't know him very well personally, and regardless if Annabelle did show him sympathy, Charlie would of still be fueled by his revenge on Carface and would of gone anyways, with sympathy or not, Charlie was too blinded by his own need of self retribution to actually think clearly on the matter.
Also if he didn't rewind the watch, what point would there be in making the movie?

I love how Carface was all 'Shup up' at Annabelle when she told him not to wind the watch. Actually, Carface had an alarm clock.

I don't blame Charlie for being quite mad and wanting to return to Earth, Sure, he should be mighty glad he went to Heaven, but Annabelle told him all dogs got to go there and didn't warn him about what would happen if he touched his watch. Also, Annabelle didn't seem to care at all that Charlie had been murdered and that Carface was still free to terrorize New Orleans. Since Heaven didn't seem concerned about justice and delivering New Orleans from evil, Charlie might have felt justified in doing what he did.

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, you're reading waaaayyyy to deep into this, First of all, Charlie could of really cared less about Heaven or not. Second, Annabelle's job in that movie was to pass the souls of dogs into heaven, because as she said before "Dogs are naturally good and Loyal and Kind" , Also Charlie outwitted Annabelle, during " Let me Be Suprised" he replaced the watch until Annabelle catches glimpse of it towards the end, (and Charlie pretty much guessed what the watch did) and I'm really sure there are plenty of other evil people other then Carface in New Orleans in that period of time, and Finally Charlie was hell bent on getting back on Carface, I think the boat for deciding right or wrong had already sailed.

Well, he wanted to get revenge at Carface. I guess Annabelle couldn't give him another chance to come back, but since he saved Ann Marie insted of getting revenge, he was forgiven. Nav is right actually. End of story. This topic has been shut down.

But we still haven't settled on why dogs who touched their watches couldn't come back,, if indeed that was the reason Charlie was in trouble. Of course maybe there isn't a real reason or Annabelle didn't know it. She strikes me as the type that might just be content to obey orders and not ask why.

You make an excellent point there... I guess the old saying is true, "You only get to live once".
